You might not know this, but Microsoft is keeping your emails safe from cybercriminals. Can you guess how many they block every second?
Microsoft has recently released just how many malicious emails were sent out to their customers last year, and the number is crazy. 35.7 billion. Which is crazy, and scary. Fortunately, Microsoft has our back and blocked malicious emails before they reached our inbox. Hallelujah for Microsoft.
But before you breathe a sigh of relief, what about the emails that could slip through? Malicious emails are incredibly dangerous and sneaky, sometimes completely falling under the radar and tricking even the best of us to permit cybercriminals to do what they like with our data. And believe me, you don’t want them getting their filthy hands on your data. It could cost a massive amount of money to get it back and will ensure an even bigger drop in reputation.
Would you recognise a malicious email if you saw one? Cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to trick us, but there are certain things you can look out for:
- Grammar/spelling mistakes in email address/content
- Email subject/attachment contains a username
- Enticement to open links and attachments
- Unlisted recipient
- Information verification required
These are just some of the things you might spot in a malicious email, but it’s not always easy. The best thing you can do is to ensure your business is properly protected, with things like multi-factor authentication.
